Commissioning an artwork is not like buying a painting from a gallery. It’s working with the artist to create a unique artwork that can be site specific and address key concerns that are inherently present in buying an already finished work of art. Difficult lighting and scale can make a space difficult to fill with art. By being involved with the early aspects of creating a work of art, you are able to influence the theme, size, color and overall look of the artwork before the artist commits to putting paint to canvas.

Process

The commission process starts by sending the artist an email. While there is typically a waiting period as the artist completes other projects, the artist will still be able to begin the concept process and work with you to find the artwork you’re looking for.

The process starts with the artist listening to what broad themes or ideas you have. You can be completely vague; a color theme or perhaps something to accent your architecture or compliment other artwork. If it’s for a specific area, I may have to travel to the location to take measurements and photographs of the space to ensure a perfect fit for the completed painting.

In about a week, you will be emailed a PDF with several concepts of the artwork based on your suggestions. Feel free to tell the artist what you like, what you don’t like, and offer suggestions of things to add, omit, or provide whole new ideas all together.

Pricing

Pricing is done by area. Smaller to medium works are priced at $1.95/inch-squared, large work is $225/foot-squared. Cost can be adjusted based on complexity of the painting, and any special requests. Financing is also available.
